Plot summary
Anna Coleman plays lead guitar in a band called Pink Slip and lives with her widowed mother, psychiatrist Tess Coleman, her younger brother Harry and her grandfather Alan. Anna has not accepted Ryan, the man Tess plans to marry, and the two argue about Anna's music, her clothes and her plans. Tess will not let Anna attend the band's audition at the House of Blues because it falls on the same night as her wedding rehearsal. The argument continues at Pei-Pei's Chinese restaurant, where each of them is given a fortune cookie. The next morning Anna wakes in Tess's body and Tess wakes in Anna's, with the wedding rehearsal that evening.

- Jamie Lee Curtis was cast four days before production began, after Nina Jacobson recommended her based on her performance in True Lies; Curtis initially nearly declined the part because she was a parent herself.
- Producer Andrew Gunn initially wanted Jodie Foster, who had played the daughter in the 1976 original, to come back and play the mother in the remake, but she turned the role down.
- Annette Bening and Michelle Trachtenberg were originally cast as the mother and daughter but both left the project over scheduling conflicts, with Bening reportedly also uneasy about the script.
- Actress Rosalind Chao based her performance as Pei-Pei on her own father, who ran a Chinese restaurant in Orange County, California, and later defended criticism of her accent by explaining it was modeled on her father's real speech pattern.
- Kelly Osbourne was originally cast as Maddie but withdrew from the film after her mother's cancer diagnosis, and she was replaced in the role by Christina Vidal.
- Other actresses considered for the role of Anna included Mischa Barton, Kristen Stewart, Mae Whitman, Evan Rachel Wood, Brie Larson, Emmy Rossum, Kristen Bell, Shiri Appleby and Danielle Panabaker.
- Tom Selleck was originally cast as Ryan but left the project once Annette Bening exited; Mark Harmon was cast in the role instead.
