Biography

Harve Presnell was an American actor and singer whose career began with classical baritone work in opera and orchestral settings during the 1950s. Born in Modesto, California, he had made a professional opera appearance by sixteen and later earned a voice degree at the University of Southern California. In 1960 Meredith Willson chose him for Leadville Johnny in the Broadway musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown, a role he reprised in the 1964 film and that brought him a Golden Globe Award. He appeared in The Glory Guys (1965) and Paint Your Wagon (1969), where reviewers singled out his singing of They Call the Wind Maria. For much of the next two decades he concentrated on musical theater, including Rhett Butler in a West End Scarlett and Daddy Warbucks in Annie tours. His film career revived with a testy father-in-law role in Fargo (1996), followed by Face/Off (1997), Patch Adams (1998), Mr. Deeds (2002) and Evan Almighty (2007).

  1. Big break

    In 1960, Meredith Willson saw Presnell perform as a soloist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Willson contacted him afterward, asked him to audition, and offered him the role of Leadville Johnny.

  2. Beyond film

    In 1960, Presnell took the baritone part in Eugene Ormandy's recording of Carmina Burana. Columbia/Sony put the recording out on LP and CD.
