Plot summary
Katie arrives in Southport, a small town in North Carolina, with a past she does not discuss, waits tables for a living, and rents a house at the edge of town. Her sudden arrival raises questions about where she came from. She intends to avoid personal ties, but her neighbor Jo and Alex, a widowed shopkeeper raising two children, Josh and Lexie, draw her into the community. Alex and Katie grow close, and she becomes a steady presence for his family, while Josh stays strained with his father. Whatever sent her running stays hidden as she begins to put down roots and weighs staying.

Late in the film Katie realizes that her neighbor "Jo" had been the ghost of Carly, watching over them all along.- Peter Travers of Rolling Stone gave the film zero stars out of four and ended his review by declaring: "I hate Safe Haven. It's a terrible thing to do to your Valentine."
- Richard Roeper called the film "Bat. Bleep. Crazy." and expressed disbelief at the twist ending; aside from that twist he would have given it 2.5 stars, but he ultimately gave it only 1.5 out of four.
- Keira Knightley had entered into early talks to play Katie, according to a 2012 Twitch Film article, but had to drop out because of scheduling conflicts with the 2013 film Begin Again.
- Safe Haven grossed $71,349,120 in North America and another $26,245,020 in other territories around the world, adding up to a worldwide total of $97,594,140.
