Plot summary
In 2508, humanity extracts resources by cracking whole planets. On Aegis VII, a colony funded by the Church of Unitology runs an illegal mining operation, and geologist Jennifer Barrows finds an artifact called the Marker. Violence and psychosis spread through the settlement as the object's influence takes hold. Captain Mathius and Dr. Kyne have the relic brought aboard the mining ship USG Ishimura, where Unitologist crew members, engineer Samuel Irons among them, hold it sacred. Security chief Alissa Vincent blames the artifact for the colony's collapse and wants it off the ship. Her team is sent to investigate a disturbance.

- So much footage was cut from Dead Space: Downfall during production that, according to its writers and director, the deleted material would have been enough for a sequel; one cut sequence was a fight between Alissa Vincent and a unique Necromorph formed from the fused bodies of her squad mates.
