Plot summary
In 2019, a plague carried by an infected vampire bat has turned most of the world's people into vampires. Human blood is running short and is rationed, and vampires cut off from it degenerate into bestial monsters called subsiders. Edward Dalton, a vampire hematologist at Bromley Marks, the largest supplier of human blood, works with his colleague Christopher Caruso on a synthetic substitute, tested on soldiers of the vampiric army. The company's owner, Charles Bromley, wants to sell the substitute. Edward, who will not drink human blood, is sympathetic to the humans still in hiding. Driving home he meets survivors led by Audrey, and she brings him to Lionel 'Elvis' Cormac, a man who was a vampire and is now human again.

- The Spierig brothers wrote the lead of Daybreakers for Ethan Hawke, but he was initially hesitant because he was "not a big fan of genre pictures." He accepted the role of vampire hematologist Edward Dalton in May 2007 after deciding the story felt "different" from that of a typical B movie.
- Sam Neill was on the set for about three weeks, and co-director Peter Spierig joked that the actor was so refined and articulate it was awkward to ask him whether he could throw a bucket of blood all over him.
- Weta Workshop created Daybreakers' creature effects; after experimenting with complex makeup designs, the Spierig brothers settled on a more minimalistic approach, wanting a classical vampire aesthetic with a contemporary feel.
