Plot summary
In Hounslow, London, eighteen-year-old Jesminder Bhamra lives with her Punjabi Sikh parents and her older sister Pinky, whose wedding the household is busy planning. Jess is fanatical about football and plays in the park with her best friend Tony, but her parents want her to focus on her studies. Jules Paxton, who plays for the Hounslow Harriers, a local women's amateur team, sees Jess play and invites her to try out, and the team's coach, Joe, a young Irish former player, takes her on. Her parents forbid it, so Jess trains in secret, claiming she has a summer job. Jules, meanwhile, hopes to play professionally in the United States.
