Plot summary
Justine Last is a bored thirty-year-old woman in a small Texas town. She works at Retail Rodeo, the local big-box store. Her husband, Phil, paints houses, and he smokes marijuana with his best friend, Bubba, in his spare time. The couple has been trying for a baby without success, though doctors say Justine is healthy and fertile. A new cashier named Holden arrives at the store; he reads The Catcher in the Rye in his spare time and identifies strongly with its protagonist.
