Plot summary
Dr. Lee, who runs the marching band at Atlanta A&T University, has offered Devon Miles a full scholarship for his drumming, and the Harlem teenager arrives with plans to lead the drumline. The band requires every member to read music, prizes teamwork over individual showmanship, and holds to a one band, one sound approach, while preseason camp pushes the musicians hard. Preseason ends with auditions for field spots, and Devon alone among the freshmen earns P1, the band's highest level. He also begins a romance with Laila, an upperclassman dancer. Sean Taylor, who leads the percussion section, has little patience for Devon's cockiness, and he challenges Devon to take a solo at his first game.
