In the Midwest, society is barely holding together after a zombie pandemic. Maggie Vogel was bitten, and she left home to keep her family safe, so her father Wade spent two weeks looking for her. He finds her in a hospital for the infected and brings her home, where the virus will turn her cannibalistic in a matter of weeks. Maggie's stepmother Caroline wants the younger children, Bobby and Molly, sent to her sister's house, and Wade's friend Dr. Vern Kaplan tells him that a time will come when he must decide what to do about Maggie. - The original screenplay, written by John Scott 3, won the Thriller/Horror category Gold Prize in the 2010 PAGE International Screenwriting Awards competition, and as a result was brought to the attention of director Henry Hobson. The following year the script landed on the Black List of “most liked scripts”.
- Hobson chose Schwarzenegger as a sort of “shorthand” for a protective father, which allowed the film to avoid having to shoot scenes establishing him as such, and he enjoyed casting the actor against type as a father who has failed to protect his family.
