Plot summary
In 1957 the Dollangangers live in Pennsylvania: father Christopher, mother Corrine, and their children Chris, Cathy and the twins Carrie and Cory. Christopher is killed in a car crash, leaving the family in debt, and four months later Corrine announces a move to Virginia, to Foxworth Hall, her wealthy parents' home. She was estranged from them after eloping, and they disinherited her. Corrine's mother Olivia lodges the four children in a small attic room and gives them rules: they stay out of sight at all times, and shift into the neighboring attic when the servants come to clean that part of the house. Corrine says her father Malcolm has to forgive her first, and promises the arrangement will last no more than a week.
