Plot summary
For refusing shelter to a beggar woman who is really an enchantress, a selfish prince is turned into a beast, and the castle staff into household objects, then wiped from the memory of everyone who knew them. The curse holds until he loves someone who loves him back before the rose loses its last petal. In a nearby village, Belle, a bookish young woman, dreams of adventure and rejects the advances of Gaston, an arrogant hunter, while her widowed father Maurice works as an artist. When Maurice is imprisoned for taking a rose from the castle garden, Belle offers to take his place.

- Emma Watson was the first and only choice of Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan F. Horn to play Belle; she had earlier been attached to star in Guillermo del Toro's Warner Bros. adaptation of the original fairy tale, which was never made.
- Malaysia's Film Censorship Board demanded the "gay moment" be cut, so Disney postponed the release indefinitely and threatened to pull the film; an appeal allowed it to open uncut with a P13 rating because censors judged the gay element minor.
- A jury found on December 21, 2023, that Disney used Rearden LLC's Mova motion capture software without permission to create the Beast, and ordered the studio to pay Rearden $600,000 in damages.
- Filming risked one wrong step sending Dan Stevens' steel stilts through Emma Watson's foot, so the pair spent three months in pre-production rehearsing; Stevens first learned to walk on stilts, then to waltz on them.
- Bill Condon refilmed part of the "Days in the Sun" number before release because test audiences confused Harriet Jones, the Queen, with Hattie Morahan's Agathe; the verse was given to the Prince and the King was recast with Tom Turner.
- Dan Stevens played the Beast in a forty-pound gray suit on stilts under motion capture, with his facial capture shot separately to "communicate the subtleties of the human face", while the household-object servants were CGI.
- Idris Elba auditioned for the role of Gaston, the part that went to Luke Evans, who was reported in talks for it alongside Dan Stevens as the Beast.
- The film's production budget was $254 million, which makes Beauty and the Beast the most expensive musical ever made.
