Plot summary
Aladdin is a thief and street urchin in Agrabah who lives with his monkey, Abu. Princess Jasmine slips out of the palace and meets him; she wants a say in how the kingdom is run, but her father, the Sultan, expects her to choose a royal husband. The grand vizier Jafar, a sorcerer, means to take the throne and believes a magic lamp in the Cave of Wonders will give him the power to do it. Only someone the cave judges worthy may enter. When Aladdin sneaks into the palace to visit Jasmine, Jafar has him captured and offers him riches in exchange for the lamp.

- Over 2,000 actors and actresses auditioned for the roles of Aladdin and Jasmine, and the struggle to find a male lead of Middle Eastern or Indian descent in his 20s who could act and sing pushed principal production back a month, to August 2017. Naomi Scott and Tara Sutaria were the final two actresses in the running for Jasmine.
- Disney was initially interested in Dev Patel or Riz Ahmed for the title role of Aladdin but later decided to cast a relative newcomer. Achraf Koutet, Mena Massoud and George Kosturos were among the actors tested for the part.
- Gilbert Gottfried said he was not asked to reprise his role as Iago, Jafar's pet parrot. In March 2019, it was announced that Alan Tudyk would voice the character instead.
- Will Smith frequently improvises throughout the film, and Mena Massoud revealed that a whole scene, in which Prince Ali and the Genie meet the royal family for the first time, was improvised by the cast.
- By the end of June 2019, Aladdin had surpassed Independence Day (1996) to become the highest-grossing film of Will Smith's career worldwide, and it also beat the domestic record previously held by Suicide Squad (2016).
