Plot summary
Late in the 19th century, the United States honors land grants made while the West was under Spanish rule, and James Reavis sets out to claim the whole Arizona territory with forged documents. In 1872 he seeks out Sofia, a foundling, brings her home, and hires governess Loma Morales to refine her. He invents parents for the girl whose line can be traced to a Spanish nobleman. To reach the records of Spanish land grants, Reavis works his way into a Spanish monastery for three years, and later joins a gypsy band so he can alter duplicate documents in a nobleman's library. He marries the grown Sofia and puts in his claim as the Baron of Arizona.
