Plot summary
Will Randall is the editor-in-chief of a New York publishing house. Driving through Vermont, he hits a large black wolf and is bitten on the hand while he tries to pull it off the road. A doctor treats him and sends him home. Days later, the tycoon Raymond Alden announces that he is taking over the publishing house, and Will accepts a demotion while his protégé Stewart Swinton is handed his old position. Alden invites him to a party at his estate, where Will meets Alden's daughter Laura. In the days that follow, the bite leaves Will with sharper senses and renewed energy, and he decides to fight for his job rather than accept a posting in Eastern Europe.

- Screenwriter Jim Harrison left the production over creative differences with director Mike Nichols: 'I wanted Dionysian, but he wanted Apollonian. He took my wolf and made it into a Chihuahua.' After the experience, Harrison decided to leave Hollywood.
- Mia Farrow was signed for the role of Charlotte Randall, but the film company apparently considered her too controversial a choice because of the then-current Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn affair. She took a pay cut to accommodate the studio before bowing out over scheduling conflicts, and Kate Nelligan was cast instead.
- The film was shot from early April to late July 1993, but its release was delayed by six to eight months so that the poorly received ending could be reshot.
