Plot summary
Lisa Holland is fourteen and her mother, Katherine, a florist, will not let her date until she is sixteen. Her friend Wendy Marks, whose parents are more lenient, has already started dating, and Lisa wants a boyfriend too. A killer nicknamed the Candlelight Killer is at large. One evening Lisa, walking home from a convenience store, bumps into a good-looking man leaving a house and copies down his license plate. A trip to the DMV yields his address and telephone number, and she starts calling him. The man, Richard, is intrigued and wants to learn who she is. Lisa and Wendy follow him to his home and to the restaurant he runs. Wendy suggests fixing Katherine up with him.
