Simon MacCorkindale
Biography
Simon MacCorkindale was a British actor who also worked as a writer, director, and producer. After studying at the Studio 68 drama school in London, he started in theater and made his West End debut in 1974. Early roles in I, Claudius and Jesus of Nazareth preceded his breakthrough performance as Simon Doyle in Death on the Nile (1978), which earned him the London Evening Standard award for most promising newcomer. He later appeared in Caboblanco (1980), The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982), and A Closed Book (2009). His television work included the lead in Manimal, Greg Reardon in Falcon Crest, Peter Sinclair in Counterstrike, and Harry Harper in Casualty. He also produced and directed with Amy International Artists, on projects such as Stealing Heaven (1988), and was nominated for a Genie Award for Such a Long Journey.

A role that slipped away
In the mid-1980s, MacCorkindale was looked at as a possible successor to Roger Moore for the part of James Bond, but he was not cast.

MacCorkindale made his professional stage debut in A Bequest to the Nation, a 1973 run at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry.

At 25, MacCorkindale took the part of Simon Doyle in the 1978 film of Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile. He saw it as his career break and it earned him the London Evening Standard Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer.
A change of course
MacCorkindale would not take on an American accent at auditions, thinking his British diction could fill a niche. For two years, though, his nationality kept him from getting past the audition stage for every major part.
