Plot summary
San Antonio in the year 2000 has banned conventional handguns, equips its police with ultrasound pistols, and freezes convicted criminals instead of imprisoning them. When an assassin kills the mayor, his successor demands a solution, and the Knight Foundation proposes its next-generation supercar, the Knight 4000. Devon Miles brings Michael Knight in as test driver, but Michael finds KITT deactivated and dismantled, its technology sold to medical research, and restores the car's artificial intelligence inside his 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air. Officer Shawn McCormick keeps asking questions about the murder weapon, survives a shooting thanks to a microchip implanted in her brain, and joins the Foundation as Michael's partner in the illegal handgun investigation.

- James Doohan appears as an innocent bystander whom KITT mistakes for a criminal stealing money from an ATM; after KITT stuns him, Michael and Maddock find him delirious and mumbling lines from his role of Scotty on Star Trek.
- Unable to use the real Pontiac Banshee IV concept car, the studio hired Jay Ohrberg Star Cars Inc. to customise a 1991 Dodge Stealth into the Knight 4000, which later turned up as a stolen supercar in CHiPs '99 and a police vehicle in Power Rangers Time Force.
- As a compromise, Hasselhoff suggested to NBC entertainment chief Brandon Tartikoff that they make four Knight Rider movies-of-the-week; NBC ordered Universal to produce just one, and Universal said it could not make money unless it made at least two back-to-back.
- Although the ratings for Knight Rider 2000 were excellent, NBC tested audience reaction to Susan Norman, who was expected to front-line the proposed new Knight Rider series, and she was given a thumbs down.
