Plot summary
Maya and Jamie live together in London. When Maya learns she is pregnant, Jamie celebrates, and then a gang attacks the couple; Maya is left unharmed. They take the chance to move to a house in rural Ireland that Jamie inherited from his great-aunt Maeve. The house needs work, so they hire the Whelans, a local family, as builders. Niamh, an old friend of Jamie's aunt, warns them to leave a liver offering at a door of the back garden each night for the Red Caps in the forest, and they take it for harmless superstition. They also learn that Maeve lost a daughter who disappeared at barely two years old, and no body was ever found. The Whelans prove violent and disturbed, and in the wood Maya comes upon a stone shrine to the Red Caps.
