Biography

Margaret Leighton was an English actress whose work spanned the stage and screen. Born in Barnt Green, Worcestershire, she made her stage debut in 1938 as Dorothy in Laugh with Me and later became a star of the Old Vic, making her Broadway debut in 1946 in Henry IV. She won two Tony Awards for Best Actress in a Play, for Separate Tables and The Night of the Iguana, and was nominated four times. Her films included The Winslow Boy (1948), her first credited screen role, Under Capricorn (1949), The Best Man (1964), The Loved One (1965), 7 Women (1965), and The Go-Between (1971), for which she won a BAFTA Award and was nominated for an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress. On television she won an Emmy for Hamlet (1970) and appeared in Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Ben Casey, and Burke's Law. She died in 1976.
