Biography

Michael Wilding was an English actor for film, stage, and television who started as a film extra in 1933 and became one of Britain's biggest film stars. Born in Leigh-on-Sea, he trained as a commercial artist, first appeared on stage in The Ringer in 1934, and made his London stage debut the following year. He appeared in In Which We Serve (1942) and then found stardom opposite Anna Neagle, beginning with Piccadilly Incident and continuing with The Courtneys of Curzon Street and Spring in Park Lane. Alfred Hitchcock cast him in Under Capricorn (1949) and Stage Fright (1950). In Hollywood he appeared with Joan Crawford in Torch Song (1953), played a pharaoh in The Egyptian (1954), and was Prince Charming in The Glass Slipper (1955). Later credits included The World of Suzie Wong (1960), The Best of Enemies (1961), Waterloo (1970), and the television movie Frankenstein: The True Story (1973). He died in 1979.
