Plot summary
Don Bradley pulls two horses out of a burning building during a forest fire and is put in charge of the Dark Mountain area, with his friend Willie Dinsmire as his assistant. On his first week off he asks Kay to marry him, and she answers that she has just married Steve Downey, a merchant. Kay discovers that Steve is a racketeer working the black market, and when the government agent Dave Lewis comes to look into the business, one of Steve's men kills him and leaves the body on the road. Kay tries to leave her husband and he refuses to let her go, telling her that the warehouse contract carries her name and makes her an accomplice. She goes to Don, who hides her in a mountain cabin.
