Max Wagner
Biography
Max Wagner was a Mexican actor who specialized in small character parts, playing thugs, gangsters, sailors, henchmen, bodyguards and cab drivers in more than 400 films, most of them uncredited. Born in Torreón, he moved to Salinas, California, as a boy, and in 1924 followed his cameraman brothers to Hollywood, where he landed a part in the Harry Langdon film All Night Long. Billed as Max Baron, he acted in Spanish-language versions of early sound films, coached other actors in Spanish, and appeared repeatedly in the Mexican Spitfire pictures of Lupe Vélez and in the Charlie Chan series, which cast him as a taxi driver in Charlie Chan in Shanghai (1935) and led producers to type him that way. Later he belonged to Preston Sturges's unofficial stock company, and his television work included nearly 80 Gunsmoke appearances between 1959 and 1973. His film credits also included the science fiction film Invaders from Mars (1953). He died in 1975.
