Abraham Sofaer
Biography
Abraham Sofaer was a British actor who began on the London stage in 1921 and later worked in theaters in London and New York. His Broadway turn as Benjamin Disraeli in Victoria Regina brought him wide notice in 1935. From the 1930s he took British and American film parts, notably a dual role as the Judge and the Surgeon in A Matter of Life and Death (1946) and Saint Paul in Quo Vadis (1951). He acted on television from the late 1930s and did radio, including a minor part in Dorothy L. Sayers's The Man Born to Be King. Film work slowed after the 1950s, yet he took guest roles on many U.S. series in the 1960s, among them three Perry Mason episodes and two Star Trek voice appearances. He may be best remembered as Haji, the genie master, on I Dream of Jeannie, and he appeared as the swami who counsels Peter Tork in the Monkees film Head (1968).
