Plot summary
Count Dracula leaves the Balkans and kills Bellac Gordal, a Czech artist crossing to the United States to see his family in Carleton, California, and then takes his identity. Bellac's widowed cousin Cora and her children, Mickey and teenage Rachel, welcome the visitor into their home. Rachel designs clothing and shares her cousin's enthusiasm for art. Their guest sleeps through the day, avoids meals with the family and removes the mirror from his bedroom, and he keeps a coffin in an abandoned mine. A European police investigator follows the trail of the murdered artist and begins asking about the man the family has taken in.
