Gene Roth
Biography
Gene Roth was an American actor who had also managed movie theaters. Born in Redfield, South Dakota, he worked as a machinist and ran cinemas for Fox and Warner Bros. before moving to California during the war. A resemblance to a Nazi figure led to his role as an agent in Adventures of the Flying Cadets (1943). His build and rough features suited menacing parts, gangsters, tough guys, and sheriffs, mostly in B movies for Columbia and Monogram. He was a villain in serials including Captain Video (1951), Mysterious Island (1951), and The Lost Planet (1953). Roth became a familiar authority figure in Three Stooges comedies such as Dunked in the Deep (1949) and The Three Stooges Meet Hercules (1962). He also appeared often on television, including seven episodes of The Lone Ranger, and retired from acting in 1967, later playing a brief part on the Planet of the Apes television program in 1974.

Big break
Gene Roth's screen career began in 1943 when, while visiting the Universal studio, a crew member noticed he resembled Ernst "Putzi" Hanfstaengl, a crony of Adolf Hitler, and he was fitted with makeup and costume to play a Nazi agent in the serial Adventures of the Flying Cadets.
A change of course
Gene Roth finished high school in 1920 and then became an expert machinist who repaired and installed pipe organs. Because these were common in movie theaters, his exposure to theaters led him to become a film exhibitor.
