Plot summary
At the end of the 19th century, Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette lives in rural Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye and begins an affair with Willy, who brings her to Paris as his bride. He calls himself a literary entrepreneur and pays ghostwriters, yet his spending on socialites outruns what their articles earn. Colette handles his correspondence. When she finds him with a prostitute, she leaves, and he persuades her to come back by promising honesty. Willy then asks her to turn the schoolgirl stories she has told him into a novel; she writes Claudine à l'école, and he rejects the draft as lacking plot. After some of his furniture is repossessed, he reads it again, suggests revisions, and the book is published under his name and becomes a bestseller.

- Cogges Manor Farm at Witney in Oxfordshire doubled as the heroine's childhood home and Salcy Park in Northamptonshire as her country house, while most of the Paris scenes were not shot in Paris at all, but in Budapest, Hungary.
