Plot summary
Johanna grows up in Ingelheim am Rhein, where her father serves as the village priest and rules his household strictly. She studies the Bible without his knowledge, and when the teacher Aesculapius visits, she shows she knows the Scriptures better than her brother Johannes. Her father sends Johannes to the cathedral school at Dorestad instead, so Johanna leaves home at night to follow him there. The bishop is surprised by her speech, and the teacher Odo admits her to his class against his own reluctance. Count Gerold takes the adolescent Johanna into his household. When Gerold leaves to fight in the army of Lothair I, his wife Richilde tries to arrange a marriage for Johanna.

- The summer after the project moved on, Schlöndorff wrote a review in the Süddeutsche Zeitung criticizing the production for film and television, which led to his dismissal, and Sönke Wortmann replaced him as director.
- Franka Potente was originally cast in the title role, but she was replaced by Johanna Wokalek in May 2008, only months before the cameras turned.
- Principal photography had already been planned when John Goodman canceled in 2007, and it was that cancellation which finally left the production shelved.
