David Harewood
Biography
David Harewood is an English actor and presenter who began acting in 1990. Born in the Small Heath area of Birmingham, he joined London's National Youth Theatre. In 1997 he played Othello at the National Theatre in London, becoming the first black actor to take that part there. His television work includes Ballykissangel, The Vice and Fat Friends, the CIA drama Homeland, in which he played David Estes from 2011 to 2012, and Supergirl, where he appeared as J'onn J'onzz, also known as Martian Manhunter, from 2015 to 2021. Among his films are Blood Diamond (2006), The Merchant of Venice (2004), Strings (2004) and Tulip Fever (2017), along with the Sally Lockhart adaptations The Ruby in the Smoke (2006) and The Shadow in the North (2007). He was appointed MBE in 2012 and OBE in 2023, and in February 2024 the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art named him its president.
