Plot summary
Georges Duroy fought in Algeria for three years and returns to Paris with no money, taking work as an office clerk. At a club he runs into Charles Forestier, a friend from those years, who has done well and asks him to his home. There he is introduced to Forestier's wife Madeleine, along with Clotilde de Marelle and Virginie Rousset, two friends of hers. Virginie's husband is an editor at La Vie Française, a conservative newspaper, and she helps Georges get work there, first by having his wartime diaries published in it. He charms the wealthy women around him, and his social and financial standing improves.
