Plot summary
In December 1941, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, soldiers of the Czechoslovak exile government, are dropped into their occupied homeland. Jozef is hurt when he crashes through a tree, and the two set out to find their resistance contact. Men posing as resistance fighters approach them; Jozef shoots one, the other flees, and the pair take a truck to Prague. The Gestapo has arrested the contact, so Dr. Eduard, a veterinary surgeon, stitches Jozef's wounds and brings them to Ladislav Vaněk and Uncle Jan Zelenka-Hajský, who lead the underground. The soldiers disclose their orders: Operation Anthropoid, the killing of Reinhard Heydrich, the Reichsprotektor of occupied Bohemia and Moravia and an architect of the Final Solution. With scant equipment and the help of Marie Kovárníková and Lenka Fafková, they plan to ambush Heydrich on his way to Prague Castle.

To recreate the assassins' final church siege accurately, director Sean Ellis built an exact replica of Prague's Orthodox Cathedral of Saints Cyril and Methodius on a studio backlot and used surviving Gestapo and Czech reports to plan and track every resistance fighter's movements.- At the Czech Lion Awards, Anthropoid received 12 nominations and lost every single one to a rival film, A Prominent Patient, though it did pick up the separate, non-statutory Film Fans Award.
