Plot summary
In 1857, Charles Dickens notices eighteen-year-old actress Ellen Ternan while she performs at London's Haymarket Theatre. He casts Nelly, her mother and her sister Maria in his three-performance staging of Wilkie Collins's The Frozen Deep in Manchester. Dickens has stopped caring for his wife Catherine, who raises their ten children and shares none of his literary passion. Nelly is drawn to his fame and his ideas. Mrs. Ternan warns him that her daughter's good name cannot be put at risk, and he promises not to damage it.

- Fiennes, whose participation as director was announced in July 2011, did not know much about Dickens before taking on the project. As he put it, he was ignorant, had only read Little Dorrit, and knew the obvious ones, Nicholas Nickleby, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, through adaptations.
- Felicity Jones was considered for the role of Nelly Ternan alongside Carey Mulligan and Abbie Cornish, and she was officially cast in December 2011, before Fiennes had agreed to portray Dickens.
- Fiennes initially approached another actor to play the role of Dickens, but it did not work out and he eventually played the part himself.
