Biography

Ralph Truman was a British character actor and a pioneer of radio, taking part in more than 5,000 broadcasts. Born in London in 1900, he came from the stage and moved into films after a 1930 run of Josef Suss, making an unbilled debut in Farewell to Love (1931). Through the 1930s he worked steadily in B pictures, then found featured roles in bigger productions, including Mountjoy in Laurence Olivier's Henry V (1944), Monks in Oliver Twist (1948), and appearances in Christopher Columbus (1949) and Treasure Island (1950), where he played the pirate George Merry. He was later known for playing men of high rank or position, among them lords, captains, admirals and governors. After retiring following Nicholas and Alexandra (1971) and Lady Caroline Lamb (1972), he died in 1977.
