Buzz Aldrin

Biography

Buzz Aldrin is an American former astronaut, engineer and fighter pilot who flew combat missions in Korea and later became the second human to set foot on the Moon. Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, he finished third in his West Point class in 1951 and earned a doctorate in astronautics from MIT. NASA chose him for its third astronaut group, and he served as pilot of Gemini 12 in 1966, performing three spacewalks. On Apollo 11 in 1969 he was the lunar module pilot and stepped onto the lunar surface after Neil Armstrong. He left NASA in 1971 and became commandant of the Air Force Test Pilot School, then retired from the Air Force in 1972. He has continued to promote space exploration, including a human mission to Mars, and created the Aldrin cycler. In 1969 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Did you know?!

A role that slipped away
Aldrin's application to NASA's second astronaut group was rejected because he was not a test pilot, and his request for a waiver was turned down.
A first
Aldrin was the first astronaut to hold a doctoral degree, which along with his orbital mechanics expertise earned him the nickname "Dr. Rendezvous" from his fellow astronauts.
Getting ready for a role
Aldrin picked his doctoral thesis because he thought it might improve his chances of being chosen as an astronaut, even though this meant skipping test pilot training, then a prerequisite.
