Plot summary
Jack Deth lives in 1992, where he works as a detective who catches unfaithful partners, and his marriage to Lena has turned rocky enough that divorce threatens if he cannot straighten out his life. Before he can meet Lena for supper to patch things up, Alice pulls him up the line to 2352, where Angel City is headed for destruction in a Trancer war. She sends him to 2005 to find where the new Trancers come from, and the only tie to Angel City's doom is Lena, who has remarried. There the U.S. government sponsors a Trancer training program run by Colonel Daddy Muthuh. R.J., who escaped from the camp, and Shark, a mandroid powered by crystals who comes at Ruthie Raines's bidding, join him in looking for a way inside.

- Writer C. Courtney Joyner was not a fan of Trancers II: The Return of Jack Deth, so he wrote Trancers III to largely ignore its events, keeping only Jack Deth's two wives, who he felt were too important to the series to remove.
- There was uncertainty over whether Helen Hunt would return as Lena because she had become a star on Mad About You, but she gladly agreed, saying she was surprised the filmmakers had considered another Trancers without her.
- C. Courtney Joyner was a fan of Megan Ward from the previous film and felt she had not reached her potential, so he rewrote her role as more of an action heroine, similar to Sarah Connor from Terminator.
