Plot summary
Detroit is sliding into collapse, and the city hands control of its police department to the megacorporation Omni Consumer Products. At OCP headquarters, executive Bob Morton pitches his own cyborg law enforcer after a rival executive's enforcement droid fails during a boardroom demonstration, and has the force restructured so that the strongest officers are assigned to the most dangerous districts. OCP's chairman, known as the Old Man, wants crime cleared from Old Detroit so he can build a development called Delta City. Alex Murphy, a veteran transferred to the Metro West precinct, is partnered with Anne Lewis. A call about a pharmacy robbery sends the two of them after a silver panel truck carrying crime lord Clarence Boddicker and his crew.

- Arnold Schwarzenegger was considered for the title role of RoboCop, but he and other actors were rejected as too physically imposing to be believable in the costume, with the fear he would look like the Michelin Man or the Pillsbury Doughboy.
- Paul Verhoeven dismissed the RoboCop script twice, not understanding its satire, until his wife Martine read it and told him he had missed the "soul" of the story about a man losing his identity.
- Peter Weller was fired from RoboCop after falling out with director Paul Verhoeven, and Lance Henriksen was considered as his replacement, but because the costume had been built for Weller he was asked to mend fences.
- Stephanie Zimbalist was cast as Anne Lewis but dropped out because of contractual obligations to Remington Steele, and her replacement Nancy Allen had her long blonde hair cut eight times before Verhoeven got the short look he wanted.
- RoboCop initially received an X rating from the MPAA, and although some reports say it was refused an R rating eleven times, Verhoeven said the number was eight; violent scenes were shortened and Media Breaks added to lighten the mood.
- The MPAA objected to the scene of mutated Emil being disintegrated by Boddicker's car, but Verhoeven, producer Jon Davison and Orion refused to cut it because it got the biggest laughs at test screenings.
- Kevin Page, who played OCP executive Mr. Kinney, had his body covered with 200 squibs. Verhoeven disliked the result and had him return months later to film it again, and Page said each squib detonation felt like a punch.
- The fully articulated fiberglass model of ED-209 took four months to build and cost $25,000. It stood 7 ft tall and weighed 300 lb.
