Plot summary
The transport Hunter-Gratzner is struck by meteor debris and comes down on a barren planet. Fry, who had the controls during the descent, ends up leading the survivors: the lawman William J. Johns; Imam Abu al-Walid and his three young pilgrims; the merchant Paris P. Ogilvie; the teenager Jack; the settlers Zeke and Shazza; and Johns's prisoner, Richard B. Riddick, whose surgically altered eyes let him see in the dark, and who slips free of his restraints in the wreckage. The planet orbits between three suns, so daylight never seems to end, and the group splits up to look for water and for Riddick. Their search leads them past a field of giant bones and through a canyon to an abandoned settlement, where a small spacecraft sits grounded.

- Ken and Jim Wheat say the original concept came from David Madden at Interscope Communications: travelers visit a planet where multiple suns mean perpetual daylight, but when an eclipse brings darkness, ghosts emerge. Those ghost antagonists survived the first draft before being replaced by physical predators.
- Twohy said he had three leads and they each thought they were the lead, which made for a lot of ego problems on the set, adding that ego problems are not always a bad thing.
- Pitch Black was the final film credit of PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, the studio having merged with Universal Pictures while the film was still in production.
