Plot summary
A secret vigilante society of nine members passes judgment on people it considers dangerous. After three months of watching a wealthy businessman, the members meet and vote to kill him, using a homemade bomb hidden in a cigar case. Two of them, Forrest and Farallone, love Lilith, the only woman in the group. Forrest declares his love and is refused. Lilith is devoted to the Cause. At the group's next meeting, by custom, she deals cards to every member, and whoever receives the ace of hearts must carry out the assassination. The ace comes to Forrest. Lilith offers to marry him that day to give him courage, and he accepts, while Farallone is left in distress.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Ace of Hearts (1921)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The Ace of Hearts was first shot with an ending in which Forrest, Lilith and their baby hide in the mountains, believing they escaped death, and Morgridge survives the bomb with an amputated arm. When Sam Goldwyn saw a screening he declared the ending preposterous and ordered it reshot.
- The 1921 film never writes its main title on screen: an Ace of Hearts playing card is shown in its place instead, a unique feature of the production.
