Plot summary
Matt Ortega is a high school senior in Colorado whose girlfriend, Jessie, dropped out the year before and headed for Los Angeles. Six months after she left, her body was discovered along Topanga Canyon; she had been beaten and strangled. Months pass with no clues and no witnesses, and police interest fades. Matt had planned to edit personal home footage into a tribute to her, and instead he starts an Internet blog inviting readers to send in anything they know about the murder. Two weeks after the site goes up, a plain paper packet arrives at his home with a Mini DV that shows Jessie being murdered, and cryptic data that may point to the killer. Distrustful of the legal process, Matt keeps the police out of it and drives to Los Angeles on his own.
