Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The ice-skating scene was shot on a refrigerated sound stage that needed more than 85 tons of refrigeration to offset the heat of the arc lights. An "ice slinger" made the ice and snow, while river sand covered with ice-cold water gave a smooth skating surface.
- Hearts in Bondage was the only film actor Lew Ayres ever directed; he won the job by negotiating with Republic Pictures to star in two of their films in return for letting him direct one.
- According to Thomas, Hearts in Bondage was the first film to depict an American Civil War naval battle since the 1914 silent film The Southerners.
- Republic Pictures reused the film's CSS Virginia-versus-USS Monitor battle footage, plus its scenes of the start of the Civil War, in the 1939 documentary Land of Liberty.
- The naval battles were staged using scale models built by the studio's special-effects team under the direction of Bud Thackery.
