Plot summary
In eighteenth-century Europe, Prince Christian, the son of a duke of Kurland and a gypsy princess, has grown into a soldier of fortune known throughout the continent as General Crack. He has lost his inheritance to the Russians and sells his sword to the highest bidder. When war threatens, Emperor Leopold II hires him, and Christian demands half the gold of Austria and the hand of the emperor's sister, Archduchess Maria Luisa, as payment. On his way to Vienna he stops at a gypsy camp, where the dancer Fidelia enthralls him, and he weds her before continuing to court, where he meets his prospective bride.
