Chano Urueta
Biography
Chano Urueta was a Mexican director, screenwriter, and actor who worked during the Golden Age of Mexican Cinema. Born in Cusihuiriachi, Chihuahua, in 1904, he started his film career in Hollywood in 1916, where he belonged to a group of Mexican actors and directors living abroad that counted Emilio Fernández among its members. He went on to direct over 100 films between 1928 and 1974. His 1953 wrestling-themed film The Magnificent Beast earned him an Ariel Award nomination for its screenplay, and he was credited with launching the popular luchador genre. He was also regarded as one of Mexican horror cinema's fathers. As an actor, he appeared in two Sam Peckinpah films, The Wild Bunch (1969) and Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974). Urueta died in Mexico City in 1979.
