John Colicos
Biography
John Colicos was a Canadian actor who built a stage reputation on Shakespeare and became known to science fiction viewers as two memorable villains. He grew up in Montreal and trained at the Brae Manor Playhouse, then worked professionally with the Montreal Repertory Theatre. In 1951 he won Best Actor at the Dominion Drama Festival, and he went to the Old Vic for the 1951 to 1952 season, playing King Lear there at the age of 22. He joined the Stratford Festival in 1961 and played Lear in its first staging of that play in 1964. His screen debut came in the Canadian film Forbidden Journey (1950). He was Thomas Cromwell in Anne of the Thousand Days (1969), the first Klingon, Kor, in Star Trek, and Baltar in the original Battlestar Galactica, and he played Kor again in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine between 1994 and 1998.

Getting ready for a role
Colicos helped design the look of the Klingons on Star Trek. When budget limits ruled out the heavy makeup planned for them, he suggested a leathery Genghis Khan style with dark skin and hair.

At 22, Colicos played the title role in King Lear at the Old Vic, the youngest actor ever to take the part there.

On American television, Colicos became known as a science-fiction villain icon. He played Commander Kor, the first Klingon shown in the Star Trek franchise, in the Original Series episode "Errand of Mercy" in 1967.
