Plot summary

Joaquin Murieta has lost everything he held dear in California: his land, his wife and his standing among respected men, and with them his faith in God and in people. He joins a band of men hired to escort a wealthy man's wife to San Francisco, away from countryside where bandits ride. Murieta learns the convoy also carries a treasure valuable in money and in faith. Threats close in on him, on the convoy and on the people of southern California, and he must decide what he believes and what to do.
