Plot summary
Don Diego Vega is the son of Don Alejandro Vega, a wealthy ranchero in the Spanish California of the early nineteenth century, and he presents himself as a fop. Ordinary citizens are mistreated by rich landowners and by an oppressive colonial government, so Don Diego puts on the mask of Señor Zorro, a rogue who defends them against the rule of Governor Alvarado, Captain Juan Ramon and Sergeant Pedro Gonzales. Zorro marks the faces of wrongdoers with a Z. Out of disguise, Diego courts Lolita Pulido with magic tricks, and she cannot stand him. Captain Ramon and the dashing Zorro also court Lolita, and Zorro is the one she likes.

- Biographer Jeffrey Vance wrote that the film's Zorro helped popularize a character who was the prototype for comic book heroes such as Batman, and that The Mark of Zorro is the movie Batman's parents, the Waynes, watched before they were murdered.
- The Mark of Zorro was the first film released through United Artists, the company formed by Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Charlie Chaplin and D. W. Griffith. Fairbanks produced it through his own Douglas Fairbanks Pictures Corporation.
- Noah Beery Jr. made the first of many dozens of screen appearances in the film, portraying a young child, and his father began sporadically billing himself as Noah Beery Sr. as a result.
