Plot summary
Samantha, still shaken by her abusive former boyfriend Jimmy, sets out with Joey, Ivan, Linda, Jade and Jack for the American Free Love Festival, a rock concert in the woods. On the way the friends stop for supplies at a gas station and get into a fight with a group of older hooligans. At the site, Frank Baker, who organized the event, presses on with the weekend even though Deputy Buzz Hall reminds him that a girl died at the previous year's concert. Mayor Hal Burton tries to bring some order to the gathering, and someone dressed as Ronald Reagan is moving through the trees.

- David Arquette gave his killer a Ronald Reagan mask after spotting one, likening it to the William Shatner mask that became Michael Myers. He also recalled seeing homeless people everywhere growing up in California because of Reagan's mental-health cuts.
- In August 2007 writer-producer Fritz Jünker sued the Arquettes' production company, Coquette Productions, Inc., for copyright infringement, claiming his 2001 film The Truth About Beef Jerky was the basis for The Tripper. The case was dropped because Jünker could not afford to take it to court.

The Tripper drew on Ronald Reagan's opposition to the environmental movement, and his 1980 Mental Health Systems Act defunding mental institutions is a major plot point: the killer is one of the patients released by it.- David Arquette came up with The Tripper while at a reggae concert in Northern California, where the surrounding redwood trees struck him as creepy and made him picture a madman emerging from the woods to hack up hippies.
