Plot summary
A cabin on an island, inherited from the brothers' late uncle, gives Matt and John a place to take friends for a few days: Matt's girlfriend Nicki, Sara and Noah, all flying in by seaplane. In the cabin the group finds a puppy that growls at Noah and slips outside; when John and Sara chase it, an older, vicious dog bites Sara. The next morning the men meet a bloodied man in the forest who warns them about the dogs. The friends fall back to the cabin, which the animals put under siege, and they recall a dog-training compound on the other side of the island.

- The film was Nick Mastandrea's debut as a director. Wes Craven had recruited him for the job after Mastandrea served as Craven's first assistant director on Wes Craven's New Nightmare in 1994.
- A sequel, A Breed Apart, written and directed by Griff and Nathan Furst, arrived on May 16, 2025, starring Grace Caroline Currey and Virginia Gardner alongside Hayden Panettiere, with a band of influencers invited to the island where the original was made.
- Because the film turns on attacks by dogs, each actor went through almost a week of dog training before filming began.
