Plot summary
Flying Squad detectives Jack Regan and George Carter arrive at a warehouse robbery in progress, where armed men are after gold bars. Regan passes some of the gold to his informant Harry. Meanwhile DCI Ivan Lewis, from the Met's professional standards department, starts looking into Regan's conduct, unaware that Regan is having an affair with his estranged wife Nancy, a fellow Flying Squad officer. Regan receives a tip about a planned robbery at a private bank, but drops that surveillance when a small jewelry store is robbed of £200,000 and a civilian is killed. Regan suspects his long-time adversary Francis Allen, though Allen's alibi places him abroad, and evidence links the Serbian criminal Makin Trebolt to the crime instead.
