Plot summary
In 1992 Bogota, drug baron Don Luis Sandoval sends Marco and armed men to kill Fabio Restrepo and his family because Fabio tried to leave the drug trade. Before the attack, Fabio gives nine-year-old Cataleya a memory card, her uncle Emilio's Chicago address, and her mother's orchid necklace. After the shooting, Cataleya flees to the U.S. Embassy and trades the card for passage to the United States. She avoids foster care, finds Emilio, and asks him to turn her into an assassin. By 2007, Cataleya works as a contract killer through Emilio, leaving an orchid at each murder to draw Don Luis's attention for revenge.

- The script was based on Mathilda, originally written by Luc Besson as a sequel to Léon: The Professional; after a disagreement with Gaumont over how to proceed, Besson and director Olivier Megaton reworked it into a standalone film.
- The nonprofit group PorColombia said the film stereotyped Colombia negatively, and its president Carlos Macias called it proof of a “total lack of creativity” in Hollywood; Saldaña replied that she wished she knew how to address “stupid unintelligent comments”.
- Colombiana grossed $36.7 million domestically and $26.8 million in other territories for a worldwide total of $63.5 million against a $40 million budget, opening at No. 2 in the first of its three consecutive weeks in the domestic top 10.
- EuropaCorp said at CineEurope in 2015 that Colombiana 2 was in development, and Saldaña told an interviewer in 2017 that she would not mind reprising her role as Cataleya, but as of 2026 no such sequel exists.
