Plot summary
Aaron Hallam, a Special Forces operator, assassinates a Serbian military leader during the war in Kosovo and returns with a Silver Star and severe mental trauma. In Oregon's Silver Falls State Park, two deer hunters are killed, and the FBI brings in L.T. Bonham, the survival instructor who trained Hallam. Bonham lives alone in British Columbia, where he frees an injured white wolf from a snare. He resists the assignment, then shows Abby Durrell's task force that a single man, not several attackers, killed the hunters. He agrees to track Hallam through the woods alone, carrying a radio and no weapon.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Hunted (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The plot is partly based on an actual event in Tom Brown Jr.'s life, in which authorities asked him to track down one of his own former students, a Special Forces sergeant who had evaded capture, an episode Brown recounts in his book Case Files of the Tracker.
- Director William Friedkin was drawn to the script because it reminded him of Tom Brown Jr., a real American wilderness survival expert whose life story Friedkin had long wanted to bring to film, and he had writers rework the screenplay after introducing them to Brown.
- Thomas Kier and Rafael Kayanan of Sayoc Kali were brought in by Benicio del Toro, and were credited as the knife fight choreographers for the film.
- Many reviewers noted striking similarities to First Blood, with which this film was unfavorably compared, and Rolling Stone summed it up bluntly as "Just a Rambo rehash".
- The production did not use a real transit vehicle for one of its chase scenes: it involved a fake light rail train on the Hawthorne Bridge.
