Plot summary
Texas Sheriff John Quincey Wydell assembles a posse to strike the Firefly family home, acting on years of murders and disappearances linked to the clan. The family shoots back. Rufus is killed and Mother Firefly is captured, but Otis and Baby get away. They steal a car and reach Kahiki Palms, a motel. Captain Spaulding, Baby's father, sets out to join them; his truck runs dry, and he takes a woman's car after frightening her son. At Kahiki Palms, Otis and Baby hold the musical group Banjo and Sullivan captive and shoot their roadie. A dragnet and bounty hunters join the hunt across Texas.

- The film went through the MPAA eight times, earning an NC-17 rating every time until the last; according to Zombie the censors objected to the motel scene between Bill Moseley and Priscilla Barnes, forcing him to cut two minutes of it for the theatrical release, though the footage was restored on the unrated DVD.
- Horror author Stephen King rated The Devil's Rejects the 9th best film of 2005 and wrote that it had no redeeming social merit but a perfect '70s C-grade picture cheesy glow, saying this must be what Quentin Tarantino meant when he made the Kill Bill pictures.
- Principal photography was emotionally draining for some of the actors; Moon Zombie remembers a scene with Forsythe that required her to cry, which took two to three hours to film and affected her so much that she did not come into work for two days afterward.
- The Devil's Rejects was the final film to feature Matthew McGrory before his death the same year, although he had a posthumous cameo in 2017's The Evil Within, which had been filmed in 2002, and the DVD release was dedicated to his loving memory.
